Green Revolution and India with good and bad consequence

After World War 2 there is a huge food scarcity in many countries of the world. In Mexico, Scientists tried a new way to maximize the food production, partly funded by the Rockefeller foundation. This technique use refined seeds, artificial fertilizers and pesticides. In addition, irrigation system were improved, with all these changes farmers are able to produce much more food than ever before.

Along with Mexico this show a massive success in India and it's subcontinets. In India M.S. Swaninathan is known as the father of green revolution under his leadership India change it's status from food importer to a leading agricultural producer country. Before all this India was suffering one of the world's worst food crisis known as the Bengal Famine. Report says more than 3 million people were died only due to hunger.

Before you judge

You must have eaten today, could you imagine what would have going through to indians when more than 3 million people were dies only because of hunger. They were ready to do whatever it takes for saving their country from hunger. So it was a very appreciable and necessary step.

Ofcourse there are two sides of a coin, there are some bad consequence along with the good and we hope policymakers will target more precisely to environment sustainability.

Bad consequence

  • Excessive use of pesticides ruin the environment by affecting many other living organism.
  • Very negligible or almost no effort were made to educate the farmers about the risk associated with intensive use of pesticides. Pesticides were spread without any proper training, they have no idea about the precautions and uses knowledge.
  • Lots of non-food grains lost their identities as only high food grains such as rice, wheat etc. were focused.
  • Only limited crops are produced instead of veriaty of crop.
  • As the leading crops during green revolution requires a lot of water, the ground water were sucked in many ways creating drinking water scarcity.
  • Soil polution touched it's peak
  • A lot of health hazards were found due to excessive use of chemicals and fertilizers.

Good consequence

  • Green revolution saved the growing human population from hunger and malneutrition.
  • Good yield even in unfavorable condition
  • Low food price
